“In Kenya, the Sengwer community have lived in Embobut forest for many generations, collectively managing the water, trees and pastures. When British colonial rule ended, the Sengwer community were not granted rights to their ancestral lands, because the land tribunals did not recognise the rights of indigenous forest dwellers. Yet the community remained in the forest growing food and keeping cows, sheep and bees. Their struggle to gain collective rights to their lands continues, amidst a deep battle for climate justice.

The Sengwer community lives a lifestyle that respects the earth, yet they are paying for the carbon debt of the world. In recent decades the World Bank, the Finnish government and the EU have all contributed “carbon offset” money to programmes to protect forests in conservation zones. These international projects do not recognise the customary land rights of the communities living there, and have been used to legitimise land grabs.  The Kenyan government has used these funds to evict the Sengwer Community, burning their homes. They have killed a member of the community, and others have sustained grave injuries.

The inspiration in this story comes from the tenacity and strength of this community. The Sengwer hold councils to decide how to take forward their case, and appeal to the rest of the world to assist them in their struggle. Marieptich Elias Kimaiyo, born in the forest, has worked to organise resistance within their community. He has been filming and documenting the burning of homes, and has hosted activists and political leaders to stand side by side with the truth. Last year he was attacked by forest guards, who broke both of his arms.

The women of Sengwer famously performed a dance in front of the president of Kenya, singing songs to demand land rights and justice.

The Sengwer indigenous community are inseparable from the forests in which they live. Elias says, “We will not give up on our land right struggle as long as it takes. Embobut is the land of our ancestors, the land of milk and honey. Leave us in peace, we are the best forest stewardship to combat climate change.”

In 2016 the Kenyan government passed laws that allow communities to register and own community lands. Yet they haven’t put a commission in place for communities to register their land. Now that the Kenyan constitution says ancestral lands should be theirs, the Sengwer community are demanding legal recognition of their right and ask for support in their struggle.”
